Brain Based Therapies for Children

Connect My Brain in Athens GA offers a unique and comprehensive approach to working with children with developmental delays. Developmental delays encompasses many diagnoses and labels from Autism, Asperger, AD(H)D, OCD, ODD, PDD, Clumsy, and many more. Today more children, than ever before, are overwhelmed with a change in development that is having a costly impact on their childhood. These children can benefit from brain based therapies.

With the increase in diagnoses many parents are experiencing the traditional journey of occupational therapy, speech therapy, social therapy, running from one office to another for brain based therapies. The traditional methods are working with children on average are 30 minutes to 1 hour one time per week. Moms feel like they live in the car, and if there are other children, the balance of caring for one over the other pulls on your heart. Parents are living with fear that they are running out of time to “fix” their child.

Connect My Brain creates a personalized motor movement program designed to integrate children with delays or altered development. Allow me the opportunity to explain. When your baby arrived, your baby’s neurological system was formed but not completely functioning. Babies are brain stem dominant. They must move in order to “turn on” the rest of their brain. They crawl before they read, they cruise before they write and they walk before they perform mathematics. There is a sequence and a progression to their development.

Babies perform their moving tasks every day, thousands of times per day. The motor tasks are performed over and over again, day after day until the milestone is accomplished. Following the normal progression of development is the uniqueness behind Connect My Brain’s programs. Our investigation in Athens GA identifies where your child’s development left off, which allows us to create a personal program for your child. Each child is distinctive and even though a child shares a label similar to another child, it doesn’t mean that one size fits all.

Programs require frequency and intensity. The motor tasks are performed every day during typical development. Exercises must be performed every day and some as often as they can be implemented. The change in your child’s neurology requires these basic principles of frequency and intensity in order for your child to make a shift in neurogenesis (the making of nerves), neuronal firing, and neuronal circuitries.

During a typical office visit your child’s program may require timing exercises utilizing Interactive Metronome, large muscle exercises, such as cross crawl, primitive reflex inhibition where an early normal reflex is creating a battle between the lower brain function and the higher brain maturation (frontal lobe), Neuro Feedback and Bio Feedback, which allows the brain to identify and learn flexibility in using brain waves, fine motor exercises through push/pull exercises creating a sensation of awareness in the very tips of the fingers and toes. As you can see there are many strategies that we can use with each child.

Our programs in Athens GA are dynamic. Some days you and I feel strong and other days we don’t feel like doing anything. The use of many therapies allows us to meet a child where they are on any given day. We are firm, when your child arrives to the office, we ask that you allow us to take over and bring your child through their program. I am sure you have experienced that often children will work with others, which will offer you a bit of a break. You are welcomed to stay and have a cup of tea or if you need to run errands, or would simply enjoy some personal time during your child’s session, please feel free to do so.

Our office offers services by the hour or by the month. We ask for a 90 day commitment. Your child needs a season of work in order to change neurological function. During the 90 days your child is moving from one neurological place to another. For example, an autistic child brain’s circuitry is typically “down regulated”. In order for that child to move towards balance or “typical development”, he or she must first learn and feel “up regulated”. The child physically experiences the firing of new neurological patterns before they can make it their own. An expected neurological pattern is a balance between up and down. Our goal is to teach the sense of regulation, so that your child can experience flexibility in their daily tasks. In order to teach an innate sense of regulation, it is critically important to stay consistent and follow your child’s program.
