How Does Your Body Function Towards Health?

The human body has often been compared to a chemical-electrical factory. Raw materials come into the body and through a series of chemical and physical reactions energy is produced in the form of electricity.

This energy can then be used by other part of the factory (body) to manufacture a wide variety of products. To produce a quality product the raw materials must be free of impurities and all the reactions must work together flawlessly. Otherwise the one or more systems can grind to a halt.

Your body works this same way. The raw materials are the proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water derived from the foods we eat. These nutrients are then used by the body in the many reactions required to manufacture the end product of a healthy and fully functional you.

The process of these reactions begins to break down when nutrients are not available in the right amounts, or they have been contaminated by toxic substances from a polluted environment. The body, however, has many systems to correct imbalances and deal with those toxins.

For example, if a muscle doesn't have enough calcium it will borrow from bone. It is the job of the immune system, liver, kidneys, intestines, skin and lungs to neutralize and remove harmful toxins and poisons from the body.

When exposure to nutrient imbalances and toxic substances continues through stress, poor diet choices, and pollution the body's defenses are overwhelmed. Proper bodily functions are lost and the signs and symptoms of illness and disease begin.

What is Functional Assessment?

Traditionally, up until now, only once your body begins to show signs of illness it is the job of your doctor or other healthcare provider to determine what has gone wrong. For centuries body fluids have been used for this purpose. Blood, urine, stool, and saliva are all collected and analyzed., The results are compared to values that are considered normal for a healthy person. This method measures what is present in the specimen at the time of collection and provides a wealth of information about the state of disease in the body. Unfortunately it doesn't measure how well the body is working.

Functional medicine uses a different approach. In many functional tests, the patient is given a challenge substance such as aspirin or caffeine. Fluid specimens are then analyzed to determine how well the body handled the challenge. In other tests, specimens are collected over hours, or days and sometimes even weeks to measure how well the body functions over a period of time. In this way, the nutrient imbalances and toxic overload that have caused the body to break down are discovered and effective treatment methods can be chosen.

Our medical consultants work with state-of-the-art government certified Functional Diagnostic Laboratories who have developed functional assessment tests that aid in finding the underlying causes of your healthcare challenge.

The detoxification pathways of the liver, the intestines digestive capacity, and the body's ability to handle stress can all be accurately measured. These functions are critical to your health. Additional tests can determine nutrient balance, functional hormone levels, and even the presence of parasites.

What's Different About Functional Treatment?

Functional nutrition has evolved through the efforts of scientists and clinicians from the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacy, clinical nutrition, and a wide array of related scientific disciplines. The functional treatments used to correct the imbalances within the body reflect this diversity.

Treatment may involve changing the types or the frequency of foods consumed. Food sensitivities and allergies are a common cause of ill health. In other cases, specific foods may be recommended to correct nutrient imbalances.

Functional biochemistry often utilizes nutritional supplements to restore body balance. Many important functions are dependent upon vitamins, antioxidants, and proteins. These critical nutrients are sometimes difficult to obtain from diet alone.

On occasion, prescription medications can also be a part of the arsenal in functional medicine. Careful and prudent use of these types of pharmaceuticals can, sometimes, help normalize body function. There use, however, is greatly minimized in place of more natural approaches to achieving measurable normalization of the patients function.

Chiropractic Works, evaluates the body as a whole. Special attention is paid to the relationship of one body system to another and to the nutrient and structural imbalances and toxic overloads that adversely affect this interrelationship. Once the body is provided with the nutrients it needs and the interference to proper function is eliminated, health and well being can be restored.

This approach has been shown to produce remarkable results with dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, glucose (sugar) metabolism, chronic fatigue, myofascial pain and many other troubling conditions.

The missing key to restoring you to perfect health could be found in the information revealed by these functional assessments.
