Neuro/Bio Feedback

Neurotherapy in Athens GA emerged in the 1970s as a drug-free procedure that identifies and treats a variety of conditions, including anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia/chronic pain, infertility, autistic-spectrum disorders, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, and addiction, as well as stroke and brain injury. This list is quite extensive.

Connect My Brain utilizes two methods for evaluating your current state of brain health. What does that mean? Brain health is flexibility in your thoughts, physical actions and function. There are many brain waves known today. There should be a flexible tone allowing us to move in and out of each wave throughout our daily encounters. However, because we often experience stressful situations, it is possible that our brain tone becomes “stuck”. The chronic change in tone literally affects the function of our body, our emotional outlook, and physical abilities. Often times we can make a shift for ourselves and begin to move forward again. However, sometimes we cannot. When we are not able to do this for ourselves, Neuro and Bio Feedback sessions help us to regain the flexibility necessary in our brain tone so that we can break the “stuck” pattern and restore health in Athens GA.

Our services include a “Stress Response Evaluation” (SRE) and a Brain Mapping. The SRE is an effective and accurate method of measuring your physiological stress response. It is a 12 minute non-invasive computerized test, using an instrument found in research facilities around the world. Sensors are attached to your skin in such areas as your shoulder muscles, the top of your head, and your hands. There are no needles or any form of skin penetration. From this computerized test, we can compare your neurological response and recovery to four types of stress challenges.

The test evaluates the brain’s influences on Heart Rate, Heart Rate Variability, Skin Conduction, Temperature, Respiration, and Muscle Responses. The SRE is an instrumental tool in determining your personal recovery protocol. Allow me the opportunity to explain the purpose of this test. This test measures your ability to have balance between Sympathetics and Parasympathetics, the Autonomic Nervous System. Sympathetics are thought to be the “flight-or-fight” mechanism and Parasympathetics is the ability of the body to relax, in order to sleep, digest, eliminate, and reproduce.

Above I mentioned Heart Rate Variability, which looks at the heart rate between inhalation and exhalation. Inhalation is equivalent to sympathetics and exhalation is equivalent to parasympathetics. So every time you inhale, the process of filling the lungs is controlled by sympathetics and every time you exhale the parasympathics regulates this process. The balance is essential to neurological function.

The second evaluation is known as a “Clinical Q”. The Clinical Q assessment is based on Dr. Swingle’s research and years of clinical experience. The Clinical Q identifies the precise nature and location of the neurological condition(s) in five critical regions. The Clinical Q requires about 6 minutes of recording time. Client reports of symptoms are generally not required but clients are encouraged to elaborate on conditions identified in the Clinical Q and, of course, to reveal any condition that the Clinical Q might not have shown. Clients are surprised by the rapidity and remarkable accuracy of the procedure and impressed that therapy actually commences during the initial intake.

Brain Mapping in Athens GA begins with the measurement of brain waves using an electroencephalograph. Specific brain-wave patterns are associated with certain physical and mental states. For example if the brain produces excessive theta waves associated with daydreaming when you’re trying to concentrate you’ll have difficulty focusing. (Drugs like Ritalin are given to kids to improve concentration.) People genetically predisposed to alcoholism are often lacking theta waves at the back of the brain and people with depression often show more beta activity over the right frontal part of the brain than the left.

Following the assessment a neurofeedback plan is created. Neurofeedback provides a person with direct feedback in “real-time” — for example, sounds or visual images on a computer monitor or vibration on the skin—about the state of particular brainwave activity. If a person hears a tone when the brain is working more efficiently than before, he will use that information to learn how to build endurance in maintaining a personal state of balance regardless of the environment.

The goal is to use your own brain activity as a form of therapy to exercise the ability to self-regulate your thoughts and body. Neurofeedback is something that you are desired to do. However, when you are “stuck”, you simply have temporarily lost the ability to do it on your own. Neurofeedback is a real-time therapy allowing you to reconnect to yourself.
